Do It Yourself

Let me begin with saying, “Lord help us today, for we are on our own”! And what I mean by that is, in leiu of what’s happening around us today and being practically confined to our houses, the things that we were accustomed to has ended.

No more going to the beauty shop to get your hair done, nail tech for our nails and no more lash extensions unless you happen to be fortunate enough to live with one who specializes in that industry. For the rest of us, we’re just going to have to wing it, google, facebook it and do it ourselves and let me add: “Good Luck With That”!

I’m going to begin with talking about me. Let me tell you about applying hair color. When I tell you I have jacked up some hair, excuse me, my hair, trying to be blonde. I went from blonde to bald in a matter of weeks. Okay, we can all stop laughing now, but I was determined to be number 613 blonde, coming from black. Go figure. I can say that was some years back and I have come a long way in the hair coloring department, but not far, and we had choices then. I just knew my beautician friends would not (for healthy hair reasons) do what I desired. So I, with my non-knowledgeable self, did it. I knew y’all would get a laugh out of that.

But now we don’t have that luxury, all shops are closed and we are now forced to fix it on our own. I saw a post where a man said, (in my own words) the men were about to see the real woman in their life now that we were unable to go out and buy wigs, get our hair, nails, eyes and makeup done. I commented and said, women who wear these accessories got back up! Can y’all help me say BUT! (And they all said but!) If we by chance can find a video that we can understand and follow, who is going to cut the hair we just installed, the wig we made it through, making? Who in the world is going to help us get the tangles out, and Lord knows help us get them there eyebrows right? Who is going to hem our pants, cut the men’s hair? Cause last time I looked, I DO NOT have a cosmetology license. So I will not be held accountable for plugs, bald spot and so forth!

I said all of that to say, now that we are no longer able to go to those who specialize in all these areas, we are having to find ways to get the job done on our own. Depending on how long we’re on lock down, some of us will become fairly good at taking care of our personal needs, because we have to, if we want it done. If they cut out going to the restaurants and ordering take out and pick up, some of us are going to actually learn how to doggone cook. Not without making lots of mistakes, but eventually we will get it right.

It is the same for our spiritual needs. Until them doors open back up, we’re going to have to read the Word for ourselves, ask the Holy Spirit to give us revelation for ourselves, sing and worship for ourselves that we may become better, mature citizens in the Kingdom of God. There is no better way to learn how to walk in the Spirit than you doing it yourself!
